This article will be known today in What is Internet Protocol. Friends, everything has a rule. Similarly, some rules have been made to properly route data on the Internet. Which we know by the name of Internet Protocol.
When we write a letter to someone, in the recipient we have to enter that person’s address very accurately. If there was some kind of error in the address, then that letter would not reach that person, in the same way Internet protocol is used to send data from one computer to another.
Today we will know what is the IP, what is the type and how does the Internet Protocol work.
What is internet protocol
A rule is used to send data correctly from one computer to another via the Internet. This “set of rules” is called the Internet Protocol.
Internet Protocol (IP) is the main communication protocol of digital message formats, which is a rule for exchanging messages between a single network or an interconnected computer network using the Internet Protocol Suite (TCP / IP). These messages are exchanged as datagrams, also known as data packets or just packets.
To transfer data from one computer to another, the data is divided into pieces, the process of which is called Packet switching, and the same broken pieces are called IP Packets or Datagrams.
IP is the primary protocol in the Internet layer of the Internet Protocol Suite, a set of communication protocols that consists of four abstraction layers: Link Layer (lowest), Internet Layer, Transport layer, and Application Layer (highest).
The main purpose and function of the IP is the distribution of the destination host (receiving computer) based on its address from the source host (source computer). To achieve this, IPs include methods and structures for placing tags (address information, which is part of metadata) within a data tag. The process of placing these tags on the datagram is called encapsulation.
History of Internet Protocol
TCP was used for data transfer until the late 1970s, which was called the “Transmission Control Protocol”. The credit for developing this TCP is given to Winton Serf. Who later added another additional protocol which we know today as Internet Protocol.
In 1974, Winton Serf published a research paper in collaboration with Robert E. Kahn, which he named Father of internet. In this research paper, he had told about the Internet Protocol.
Today, TCP / IP Protocol is used in the Internet that we use.
Types of Internet Protocol
When we think of the Internet we often think of the World Wide Web (www). The web is one of the many ways to obtain information from the Internet. These different types of Internet connections are known as protocols.
You can use different software applications to access the Internet with each of these protocols, although you probably won’t need it. Many Internet web browsers allow users to access files using most protocols.
The Internet uses many different protocols to communicate throughout the network. The currently used protocols were developed many years ago. There are different types of web protocols for communicating between server and client which is as follows.
- FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
- HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)
- Telnet
- Electronic Mail (E-mail) using SMTP or POP or IMAP
1. FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
Web protocols are necessary for communication between client and server. We have also discussed the HTTP protocol, FTP is another type of web protocol that helps in transferring files from one point to another.
It allows users to transfer files from one computer to another. Using the FTP program, a user can logon to a remote computer, browse through their files, and either download or upload files. It can be any type of file.
2. HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)
HTTP is a protocol used to transfer a web page from a web server to a web client. A web client is usually a web browser. In particular, HTTP is a set of rules required for the exchange of files, such as text, images, video, and multimedia content, across the web.
An essential concept of HTTP is that files contain references to other files, so they are “connected” to each other. The files transferred by HTTP are HTML files and others that the HTTP service can serve. Web servers are often called HTTP servers. The hypertext transfer protocol uses port number: 80.
3. Telnet
The best example of Telnet is the Team Viewer software. Telnet is an application protocol used on the Internet or local area network. Using this, you can operate by remote logging in on any other computer that is kept away.
4. Electronic mail
Electronic Mail is also known as E-mail protocol. The email protocol consists of three different protocols.
- SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
- IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol)
- POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3)
SMTP is a protocol used to send mail, while IMAP and POP3 are used to receive mail. Almost all Internet service providers support all three protocols. However, most email service providers use SMTP to send mail when using POP3.
