How to do Image Optimization for Blog
In order to optimize the image properly, you have to follow the procedure I have explained here. Especially for those who have created a blog on BlogSpot, it is very important. Because you do not get any plugins on Blogger, that is why your blog’s image has to be manually optimized.
1. Choose Right Images
You must have heard the saying ‘A picture is worth a 1000 words’, meaning a picture is worth a thousand words. For this reason, choose the right image for your article, so that your post looks more informative and audience retention is maintained.
Never use copyrighted image in your blog.
Many bloggers download the image from Google search and use it on their blog, which can be copyrighted.
From websites like Pixabay, FreeDigitalPhotos, Pexels, FreeImages, you can download stock images for free and use on your blog.
If you know graphics design then it is best that you make custom images for your blog. You can design an image for your blog post in Photoshop or you can create a custom image from platforms like Canva.com, PicMonkey.com.
2. Rename Images
Before uploading the image in a blog post, please rename it according to the keywords. When you download an image from a website, its name is something like “01asck.jpg or 326rjh5.png”. Such file names are not search engine friendly.
While rename the image, use the main keyword in it. With the keyword in the image, the search engine ranks it much better.
Example– If you are writing the article “How to rank number one in google 2020”, then the name of the image will be something like “rank-in-google.png” or “rank-one-in-google.jpg”.
Always write the name of the image in small letter and use dash (-) in between every word.
Wrong Format: “03od235pf.jpg”, “Image optimization.png”, “Makemoneyonline.png”
Perfect Format: “make-money-online.jpg” or “off-page-seo-guide.png”
3. Resize Image (Height & Width)
Properly resizing the height and width of an image is a necessary factor in image optimization, which most bloggers overlook.
Note– If you upload an image in your blog post and resize it in the post editor itself, whenever the browser loads this page, the image will first be loaded in the original dimension and then it will be resize. This will increase the loading time of your page.
Whenever you download an image, its dimension (Height & Width) can be more, so it is necessary to resize before uploading to your blog. You can resize the image in the computer with the help of Paint tool or Photoshop. Apart from this, online tools like PicMonkey and PicResize can also be taken help.
According to me, you should not keep the main image of the blog post more than 600 X 360 pixels. I use an image of 650 X 340 pixels in my blog post.
4. Image Compression
The higher the file size of the image, the more time it will take to load your page. For this reason, before compressing the image in the blog, compress its size.
Try to keep the file size of your image within 50kb. According to me, use image / screenshot within 80kb at most. The more high quality image you use, its file size will also be higher.
There are many tools available online like TinyPNG, Optimizilla, ImazeOptimizer with the help of which you can compress the image up to 80% without reducing the quality.
Note– If you resize the image properly and compress its file, then the loading time of your blog will be increased by 65%.
5. ALT Text
The search engine is unable to recognize the image and treats it as a blank space. Alt Text is used to describe your image. This tells the search engine that your image is here and what the image is about.
After uploading the image in BlogSpot blog, by going to its properties, you can use title text and alt text, as in screenshot.
If you have a blog on WordPress, after uploading the image you will find a box of alt text on the bottom right corner, here you can add alt text keyword.
In alt text, you should use the main keyword or related keyword of your article, so that the rank of your image can be better in image searches.
